A phone advertised as IP67 or IP68 is water-resistant under specific laboratory conditions—it is not permanently waterproof. Seals can be affected by wear, impact, damage or disassembly, and there is no safe home test that proves an older or repaired phone still meets its original rating.

The practical rule: treat an IP rating as protection against an accident, not permission to create one. If the phone is cracked, separating, repaired, bent or showing internal condensation, assume its water resistance may be compromised.
If the screen or back is lifting, stop charging the phone. Separation can be caused by a swollen battery, which is a fire-safety issue as well as a path for moisture. Keep the device away from heat and flammable materials and arrange professional service.

Waterproof and Water-Resistant Are Not the Same

“Waterproof phone” is convenient marketing language, but manufacturers usually describe smartphones as water-resistant. Resistance has limits: a particular liquid, depth, duration, temperature, pressure and condition of the device. Waterproof suggests no water can enter under any realistic circumstance, which an ordinary smartphone rating does not establish.

What IP67 and IP68 Really Mean

An IP code normally has two characters after “IP.” The first numeral covers protection against solid objects and dust; the second covers water. An “X” means that part was not specified by that rating—not automatically that the device has zero protection.2

Why a laboratory rating is not a swimming guarantee

Laboratory testing is controlled. Real life adds motion, impacts, temperature changes, soap, salt, chlorine, pressure from moving water and aged seals. Apple specifically tells users to avoid swimming, bathing, intentional submersion, saunas, steam rooms and high-velocity water with an iPhone.3 Samsung similarly warns against unclean liquids, high pressure, steam rooms and abnormal temperatures.9

Eight Signs Water Resistance May Be Compromised

No visual checklist can certify that a phone still meets an IP rating. These signs instead tell you when it is unsafe to rely on the original protection.

1. Cracked front or back glass

A crack creates a potential ingress path and can indicate a larger impact to the frame or adhesive. Samsung explicitly says chips and cracks can significantly reduce dust and water resistance.8 A case may cover the crack, but it does not recreate the factory seal.

2. A lifted screen or separated back panel

Any gap between the display, back and frame defeats the assumption of a sealed enclosure. Separation can come from failed adhesive, frame damage or a swollen battery. Do not press a lifted screen back into place, puncture the battery or keep charging it.

3. A bent, dented or repeatedly impacted frame

A hard drop can deform the enclosure or disturb adhesive even when the glass survives. Google warns that dropping a Pixel may result in loss of water resistance.7 You cannot prove a seal failed merely from one drop, but you should stop treating the rating as dependable after visible structural damage.

4. A damaged or poorly seated SIM tray

On models whose SIM tray uses a gasket, a torn, missing, dirty or pinched seal can create a direct gap. The tray should sit flush and be installed exactly as the manual instructs. Do not coat the gasket with household glue, oil or sealant.

5. The phone has been opened or repaired

Display, battery, rear-glass and internal repairs normally require opening a sealed enclosure. Correct replacement adhesive, clean surfaces, controlled assembly pressure and device-specific testing all matter. Google states that device repair or disassembly can diminish or eliminate water resistance.7

6. Fog or droplets appear inside a camera lens

Visible condensation behind the camera cover suggests moisture is already inside or a seal is not controlling the internal environment. Stop charging, back up important data if the phone remains safely usable, and arrange service. Do not heat the camera area to “evaporate” it; heat can harm the battery, display and adhesives.

7. Moisture alerts continue after proper drying

Do Age, Heat and Fast Charging Remove Water Resistance?

Age is a risk factor, not a diagnosis. Manufacturers acknowledge that water resistance can decrease with normal wear, but a phone's birthday does not reveal the current condition of every seal. A carefully used older phone may look intact, while a newer dropped or poorly repaired phone may already be compromised.

Extreme heat can damage electronics and batteries, and manufacturers advise against high temperatures. However, it is misleading to claim that ordinary supported fast charging automatically destroys the waterproof adhesive. Is a Repaired Phone Still Water-Resistant?

A passed post-repair test is evidence about the phone at that moment; it is not a lifetime guarantee. Continue to avoid intentional immersion, especially if the repairer will not stand behind water resistance in writing.

Can a phone app test the seal?

Some apps infer pressure changes from a barometer while the user presses the screen. That may show that the pressure sensor reacts, but it cannot certify every gasket, microphone membrane, speaker mesh, camera seal and charging-port path to an IEC rating. Treat such results as experimental, not proof that a repaired phone is safe to submerge.

What to Do If Your Phone Gets Wet

Follow the exact manufacturer instructions for your model. When those instructions are unavailable, use a cautious, non-destructive sequence:

  1. Remove it from the liquid and disconnect power. Unplug cables, adapters and wired accessories. Do not keep testing the charging port.
  2. Remove the case and wipe the exterior. Use a soft, lint-free cloth. Hold the connector downward so gravity can help drain external moisture.
  3. Power off if the phone is abnormal or water may be inside. Heat, flickering, camera fog, repeated restarts or a lifted panel justify stopping use.
  4. Let it dry with room-temperature airflow. Place it in a dry, ventilated area. A cool fan is safer than a heater.

What about salt water, pool water, soap or a drink?

Contaminants can be more damaging than clean water because salts, sugars and chemicals can remain after the liquid evaporates. How to Reduce Water-Damage Risk

Check the exact model's manual instead of assuming every variant has the same IP rating.
Never submerge a phone just to test whether the seal still works.
Repair cracks, frame damage and lifting panels promptly.
Keep the SIM tray clean, correctly installed and fully seated.
Avoid steam rooms, saunas, hot tubs, pressurized water and high-speed water sports.
Use a properly rated waterproof pouch for boating, swimming or heavy rain.

An ordinary protective case can reduce impact damage, which indirectly helps preserve the enclosure, but it does not restore an IP rating. Liquid Damage, Warranty and Contact Indicators

An IP rating and warranty coverage are separate questions. Apple states that liquid damage is not covered by its standard warranty, while noting that consumer-law rights may still apply.3 Google says liquid damage voids the limited warranty for the referenced Pixel model.7 Terms vary by manufacturer, model, plan, repair history and country, so check the documents that apply to your purchase rather than assuming all damage is covered or excluded.

Many phones include internal liquid-contact indicators. Apple explains that its indicators normally appear white or silver and turn fully red after contact with water or a water-containing liquid.5 An indicator is evidence of liquid contact at its location; it is not a home water-resistance meter and does not tell you that every component is damaged.
