2. Gemini for Home Will Make Control More Conversational
Google is rolling out Gemini for Home to supported speakers and displays, with availability varying by country, account, device and subscription.
On eligible products, Google describes more natural instructions, follow-up questions, context from earlier requests, smart-device control, camera-event summaries and natural-language automation creation. A request such as “Every weekday, turn on the entrance light shortly before sunset, but only when someone is home” could be converted into a proposed automation for the user to review.
Hardware Still Matters
Software can improve conversation and cloud features, but it cannot add missing microphones, cameras, sensors, memory or local-processing capacity. Buyers should check support for the exact model instead of assuming every Gemini for Home device works identically.
3. Matter Is Building the Connection Layer for Future AI Homes
Matter is a connectivity standard, not artificial intelligence. It helps compatible products exchange information; an AI assistant or automation platform decides how to use that information.
Matter 1.5: Cameras and Energy Information
CSA released Matter 1.5 on November 20, 2025. It added or expanded support for cameras, closures, soil sensors, energy metering, tariffs, grid information, EV charging, vehicle battery status, solar generation, home batteries and bidirectional power. Camera capabilities include live video, two-way audio, pan-tilt-zoom controls, detection and privacy zones, and event integration.
Manufacturers still choose which functions to implement. A camera might offer basic viewing across ecosystems while reserving cloud recording or advanced analytics for its own application.
Matter 1.6: Setup and Multi-Ecosystem Control
CSA released Matter 1.6 on June 17, 2026. Announced changes include NFC commissioning, clearer device-capability information, better multi-ecosystem coordination, context-aware thermostat suggestions, security-event history and improved reporting of device operating states.

4. Aliro Could Standardize Digital Building Access
Aliro 1.0, released by the Connectivity Standards Alliance on February 26, 2026, is a mobile-access credential and communication standard for compatible user devices and access readers. It is not an AI system.
Aliro 1.0 supports NFC, Bluetooth Low Energy and Bluetooth LE combined with UWB for different access experiences. Manufacturer adoption, mobile-wallet support and certification are still required. CSA describes expanded uses such as secure key sharing as possible future phases. Temporary guest access, remote removal of credentials from lost devices and personalized post-entry workflows should not be presented as confirmed Aliro 1.0 features unless a product maker documents its own implementation.
Aliro Is Not One Universal Key
Aliro does not immediately provide one key for every home, workplace, hotel and car. Adoption depends on certified readers, locks, user devices, wallet providers, credential issuers, building systems and local policies. Vehicle digital keys also have separate standards and manufacturer requirements.
5. Samsung Is Treating the Home as One Coordinated System
Samsung has documented Home AI and SmartThings experiences, including connected televisions, appliances, climate, energy and security functions.

BMW, GM, Hyundai, Apple, Google and Volvo are all developing assistants that can understand more natural language and maintain context across a conversation.
A driver may eventually say:
“Find a fast charger near a coffee shop, add it to the route, tell me how much battery we should have when we arrive, and message the family with our expected arrival time.”
This request contains several separate tasks:

BMW and Alexa+
BMW is bringing Amazon Alexa+ technology into an enhanced BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.
The system is intended to understand several questions in one sentence, control supported vehicle functions, answer broader questions, and assist with navigation or charging searches.
The rollout is planned to begin during the second half of 2026 in Germany and the United States for supported vehicles using BMW Operating System 9 or BMW Operating System X.
BMW says Neue Klasse technology will be integrated into 40 new models and model updates by 2027.
This does not mean every model will receive identical functions. Support will depend on the vehicle, hardware, software, country, equipment package, subscription and local regulation.
GM and Google Gemini
The staged rollout covers approximately four million eligible vehicles in the United States.
Gemini may help drivers search for destinations, ask follow-up questions, understand or compose messages, access entertainment and ask how supported vehicle features work.
The rollout requires compatible vehicle hardware, an eligible OnStar connection, a signed-in Google account, supported language settings and user activation.
Hyundai Pleos Connect and Gleo AI
Hyundai Motor Group introduced Pleos Connect and its Gleo AI assistant.
The first limited deployment began in South Korea through the new Grandeur in May 2026. Wider expansion is planned across Hyundai, Kia and Genesis vehicles and additional international markets.

3. AI Will Coordinate More Applications
Google says Gemini Intelligence will expand to cars later in 2026. Confirmed examples include contextual replies and supported application actions, but exact capabilities will vary between Android Auto, Google built-in vehicles, phone hardware, applications, accounts and markets.
Calendar, charging and other cross-application functions should be listed only when a primary source confirms them for the relevant vehicle platform. Google’s announced in-car examples include contextual assistance in Android Auto and deeper vehicle integration in eligible cars with Google built-in.
Android Auto
Android Auto relies heavily on a connected smartphone for applications, account information and processing. Features can therefore depend on the phone as well as the vehicle display.
Google Built-In
Google built-in runs through software installed in the vehicle and may have deeper manufacturer-approved access to navigation, displays and vehicle information. A phone feature should not be assumed to work identically in every Google built-in vehicle.
4. Older Vehicles May Receive AI Through Software Updates
Volvo says it will extend Gemini to eligible Google built-in vehicles, including supported models dating to 2020. This shows how software updates may improve voice, navigation and connected services, but older processors, microphones, displays, cameras and sensors can still limit feature parity with newer vehicles.
5. More Automotive AI May Run Inside the Vehicle
Mercedes-Benz is working with Liquid AI on embedded intelligence for supported third- and fourth-generation MBUX systems in North America, with an initial production deployment targeted for the second half of 2026. The work is intended to improve speech recognition, language understanding, contextual reasoning and vehicle-function control without requiring continuous cloud communication.
Local processing may improve speed, privacy and operation in weak-coverage areas, while cloud services remain useful for current information and broader requests. A hybrid design therefore appears likely.
6. AI Is Also Improving Navigation
Google’s Immersive Navigation with live lane guidance uses a compatible vehicle’s forward-facing camera with map and position data to identify the travel lane. Google says camera analysis occurs in the vehicle.
Live lane guidance is not autonomous driving. Drivers must watch the road and override incorrect guidance; performance may be affected by weather, blocked cameras, roadworks, faded markings or outdated map information.
7. AI-Assisted Driving Will Expand, but Drivers Remain Responsible

Mercedes-Benz describes MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO as an advanced SAE Level 2 system.

Stellantis and Wayve plan a hands-free supervised product for 2028 in North America. The companies use “Level 2++” to describe it.
Level 2++ is not a separate SAE automation level. Under SAE J3016, the planned system remains Level 2. The driver must continually supervise the driving task, remain engaged and be ready to steer, brake or accelerate. Legal liability depends on the applicable jurisdiction, facts and circumstances.
Descriptions such as “door-to-door” or “point-to-point” should not be confused with fully autonomous driving.
What the Automotive Announcements Show
Automotive assistants are becoming more conversational, manufacturer systems are gaining deeper vehicle context, and eligible older vehicles can receive substantial software updates. Local and cloud processing are likely to coexist. Supervised driver assistance is also expanding faster than fully autonomous private vehicles.
Robotaxis Are a Separate Category
Stellantis, Wayve and Uber are separately exploring Level 4 robotaxi services. Those commercial driverless systems should not be confused with the supervised Level 2 product planned for private vehicles.

Matter 1.5 introduced support for electricity tariffs, metering, EV state of charge, bidirectional power, solar generation, battery storage and grid information. Standardized communication could reduce compatibility problems among solar panels, batteries, chargers, vehicles and home platforms.
It does not guarantee that every company will expose advanced analytics, battery controls, grid services or remote diagnostics to competing ecosystems.
4. A Future Home May Use One Coordinated Energy Plan
A user might ask a system to preserve enough EV range for tomorrow, use excess solar power and avoid an expensive tariff period. Doing that safely requires current battery levels, expected travel, household demand, solar forecasts, electricity prices, charger limits and a user-defined reserve.
