How Phone Earthquake Alerts Work on Android and iPhone

Modern Android phones and iPhones can receive earthquake warnings, and some Android phones can help detect shaking. The technology may provide useful seconds to take cover, but it does not predict earthquakes and it cannot promise an alert before every tremor.

The essential answer: Earthquake early-warning systems detect an earthquake that has already begun, estimate where strong shaking may travel next, and send alerts to phones in the expected area. If you feel shaking or receive an urgent alert, act immediately: Drop, Cover and Hold On.
Never wait for your phone before protecting yourself. An alert can arrive before, during or after shaking starts—or not arrive at all. Network conditions, distance from the earthquake, detection time, local support and phone settings all affect delivery.

Earthquake Early Warning Is Not Earthquake Prediction

An earthquake prediction would have to identify a future earthquake's time, location and magnitude before it begins. The U.S. Geological Survey says scientists cannot currently predict major earthquakes that way.1

Early warning is different. Sensors first detect an earthquake that is already in progress. A system then estimates its location, magnitude and likely shaking intensity and sends a message if alert thresholds are met.2 Because electronic messages can travel faster than damaging seismic waves move through the ground, people farther from the source may receive some warning.

The useful lead time may be only seconds. Someone near the earthquake's origin may feel shaking before an alert arrives, while someone farther away may receive more notice. Detection, analysis and phone delivery each consume time, so “early warning” does not mean “always before shaking.”

Magnitude and intensity are not the same. Magnitude describes the earthquake's overall size. Intensity describes the shaking and effects at a particular place, so it can differ from one neighborhood to another.9 Phone alerts therefore consider both the estimated event and the shaking expected near you.

How Can a Phone Detect an Earthquake?

Every smartphone contains an accelerometer, a sensor that measures movement and orientation. It helps rotate the screen, count motion and support other features. On participating Android phones, it can also recognize vibration patterns that might be earthquake shaking.

One moving phone is not enough evidence. A dropped handset, passing truck or vibrating appliance could produce a misleading signal. In countries served by Google's crowdsourced Android Earthquake Alerts System, a phone that detects possible shaking can send a signal and coarse location to Google's detection server. The server combines reports from many phones in the same area to determine whether an earthquake is occurring.4

  1. Initial movement is detected. Seismic sensors or multiple stationary Android phones notice vibration consistent with an earthquake.
  2. The network confirms a pattern. A server compares signals from many locations instead of trusting one phone.
  3. The event is estimated. The system rapidly estimates the earthquake's location, size and expected shaking.
  4. An alert area is selected. Phones likely to experience relevant shaking are identified using approximate location.
  5. Warnings are delivered. Supported phones receive a notification with the early estimate and protective instructions.

Google describes more than two billion Android phones as a potential worldwide detection network.4 That does not mean every Android phone is always recording or that one handset independently announces an earthquake. Confirmation comes from a network, and Google says coarse locations used for alerting are not used to identify or locate a specific user.3

Why the U.S. West Coast works differently

In California, Oregon and Washington, Android distributes alerts based on the USGS ShakeAlert system. ShakeAlert uses a dedicated network of seismic instruments rather than relying on phone accelerometers as its primary detection source.4 USGS and partners then deliver messages through supported operating systems, wireless emergency alerts and approved apps.5

How Android Earthquake Alerts Work

Google says supported Android phones can alert users about nearby earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater using approximate location. Alerts are on by default in supported countries, but the phone must have Wi-Fi or mobile data turned on.3

Google currently documents two alert levels:

Be Aware

Designed as a heads-up for weak or light shaking. Google says this notification respects the phone's volume, Do Not Disturb and notification settings.

Take Action

Designed for expected moderate to heavy shaking. It can break through Do Not Disturb, turn on the screen and play a loud sound so the user can protect themselves.

Tapping an Android alert can show safety guidance and an early map with the estimated location and magnitude. These are rapid estimates, not final scientific measurements, and they may be revised.

How to turn on Android earthquake alerts

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Safety & emergency.
  3. Tap Earthquake alerts.
  4. Make sure Earthquake alerts is turned on.
  5. Keep Wi-Fi or mobile data and location-related services available so the phone can determine whether an alert applies to your area.

If Safety & emergency is missing, Google suggests checking Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts. Menu wording can vary by phone maker and Android version. Search Settings for “earthquake” if neither path matches.

Does Android earthquake detection work in Pakistan?

Yes—Google's official support page lists Pakistan among the countries where the Android Earthquake Alerts System is active as of July 29, 2026.3 Availability can change, and a supported country does not guarantee that every phone, network or earthquake will produce an alert. Check the setting on the actual device instead of assuming it is enabled.

Privacy control: Google says you can stop a phone from contributing sensor reports to earthquake detection by turning off Google Location Accuracy. That choice can also affect other location features; it is separate from simply switching earthquake notifications on or off.3

How Earthquake Alerts Work on iPhone

An iPhone may receive earthquake information through government or carrier-supported alerts, Apple's Enhanced Safety Alerts in certain regions, or an approved regional app. Availability is not the same everywhere.

Government and emergency alerts

Apple says iPhone can receive government, emergency and public-safety alerts. Government Alerts are enabled by default, but support depends on the country or region and a supported SIM or eSIM carrier. Some governments do not allow certain alerts to be disabled.6

To review them, open Settings > Notifications and scroll to the bottom. The available switches may be called Government Alerts, Emergency Alerts, Public Safety Alerts or similar names. If the section does not appear, the alert type may not be supported by the current carrier or region. In Japan, for example, Apple documents separate Emergency Earthquake Alerts within the Emergency Alerts settings.8

Apple Enhanced Safety Alerts

Apple's Enhanced Safety Alerts are a newer, separate system. As of this fact-check, Apple says they require iOS 26.2 or later and are available only in the United States and Taiwan. They can provide supplemental earthquake and flood alerts over Wi-Fi and cellular data.6

Apple describes two earthquake levels:

  • Awareness Alert: tells you an earthquake was detected nearby and to prepare to act if necessary.
  • Action Alert: a critical alert for an area where strong shaking is expected, telling you to take immediate protective action.

On a supported iPhone, open Settings > Notifications, scroll down, then choose Enhanced Alerts > Enhanced Safety Alerts. Earthquake Alerts and Imminent Threat Alerts are on by default. Apple's optional Improve Alert Delivery setting shares approximate location to improve timeliness and reliability; Apple says it is off by default and that the approximate location is not stored.

Important for readers outside the United States and Taiwan: Enhanced Safety Alerts are not currently available there. An iPhone may still receive a government or carrier emergency alert if local authorities and the carrier support one. Check local disaster-management and carrier guidance rather than assuming the Apple system is active.

Neither platform should be treated as a substitute for official local instructions, a household emergency plan or immediate action when shaking begins. What Phone Earthquake Alerts Cannot Do

They cannot predict a future earthquake. Detection begins after the event starts.
They cannot detect every earthquake. Small, distant or difficult events may not meet thresholds.
They cannot guarantee advance notice. People near the source may receive no warning time.
They cannot guarantee perfect estimates. Early magnitude, location and intensity can be wrong or revised.
They cannot overcome every outage. Data, carrier congestion, phone power and service availability matter.
They are not automatically tsunami alerts. Coastal users must follow separate tsunami warnings and natural signs.

Google explicitly warns that not all earthquakes can be detected, that magnitude and intensity estimates may contain errors, and that an Android alert can arrive before, during or after shaking. It is also possible to receive an alert but feel little or no shaking at your location.3

A false or unfelt alert does not automatically mean the whole system failed. The first estimate may change, local soil and buildings can affect what you feel, or the earthquake's energy may produce stronger shaking elsewhere. Conversely, the absence of an alert does not mean the movement is harmless.

Why the phone might not alert you

  • The earthquake or expected local shaking was below the system's threshold.
  • Your country, region, carrier, device or software version is unsupported.
  • Earthquake alerts, location-related services, data or Wi-Fi were turned off.
  • The phone was powered off, disconnected or unable to receive the message in time.
  • You were too close to the source for useful warning before shaking arrived.
  • The system did not detect or confirm that particular event.

What to Do When an Earthquake Alert Arrives

If the alert indicates strong shaking—or if you feel shaking without any alert—stop reading the screen and protect yourself. USGS and the CDC recommend Drop, Cover and Hold On in most situations.510

Indoors

Stay inside. Drop to your hands and knees, cover your head and neck under a sturdy desk or table if one is nearby, and hold on. Move away from windows and tall furniture only if you can do so immediately and safely. Do not run outside, stand in a doorway or use an elevator.

Outdoors

Stay outside and move to an open area away from buildings, trees, utility poles and wires. Get low and remain there until the shaking stops. The area next to exterior walls is especially hazardous because glass and building material may fall.

Driving

Pull over as safely as possible away from bridges, overpasses, utility wires and buildings. Set the parking brake and remain in the vehicle until shaking stops. Afterwards, watch for damaged roads, fallen wires and collapsed structures.

Limited mobility

If using a wheelchair, lock the wheels and protect your head and neck with your arms, a pillow or another sturdy object. If you cannot drop, remain seated so you are less likely to be knocked down.12

After the main shaking stops

  • Expect aftershocks. Drop, Cover and Hold On again if shaking resumes.
  • Check yourself and others for injuries before moving unnecessarily.
  • Leave a damaged building carefully when it is safe, and do not re-enter until authorities approve it.
  • Watch for fire, gas leaks, broken glass, damaged wiring and fallen power lines. Follow local emergency instructions.
  • Near a coast, follow official tsunami warnings and local evacuation routes. Strong or prolonged shaking can itself be a natural warning to move inland or to higher ground after the shaking stops.
  • Use text-based communication when networks are congested, and preserve battery power.

The CDC notes that aftershocks can occur minutes, days, weeks or even months after a larger earthquake and recommends the same protective action when one is felt.11

Prepare Your Phone Before an Earthquake

Emergency features help most when they are checked before a crisis. Use this quick preparation list:

Confirm the built-in earthquake or government alert setting is visible and enabled.
Install current Android, Google Play system or iOS updates from official settings.
Allow the location and connectivity required by the supported alert system.
Add emergency contacts and important medical details to the phone's lock-screen emergency information.
Keep a power bank charged and a cable that works with your phone.
Download an offline map and save local emergency numbers and meeting points.
Practice Drop, Cover and Hold On with everyone in the household.
Verify local disaster-management, tsunami and evacuation information from official authorities.

Do not install an unknown app that claims to predict earthquakes, and do not grant excessive permissions to a generic alert app. In California, Oregon and Washington, USGS specifically notes that there is no official app named “ShakeAlert”; alerts are delivered through approved methods such as operating systems, wireless emergency alerts and partner apps.5
